چکیده

Radiation-produced electrons initiate various reaction processes that are important to radiation damage to biomolecules. In this work, the site of attachment of the prehydrated electrons with methylacetoacetate (MAA, CH3-CO-CH2-CO-OCH3) at 77 K and subsequent reactions of the anion radical (CH3-CO•-CH2-CO-OCH3) in the temperature range (77 to ca. 170 K) have been investigated in homogeneous H2O and D2O aqueous glasses by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. At 77 K, the prehydrated electron attaches to MAA forming the anion radical in which the electron is delocalized over the two carbonyl groups. This species readily protonates to produce the protonated electron adduct radical CH3-C(•)OH-CH2-CO-OCH3. The ESR spectrum of CH3-C(•)OH-CH2-CO-OCH3 in H2O shows line components due to proton hyperfine couplings of the methyl and methylene groups. Whereas, the ESR spectrum of CH3-C(•)OH-CH2-CO-OCH3 in D2O glass shows only the line components due to proton hyperfine couplings of CH3 group. This is expected since the methylen protons in MAA are readily exchangeable in D2O. On stepwise annealing to higher temperatures (ca. 150 to 170 K), CH3-C(•)OH-CH2-CO-OCH3 undergoes bimolecular H-atom abstraction from MAA to form the more stable radical, CH3-COCH•-CO-OCH3. Theoretical calculations using density functional theory (DFT) support the radical assignments.

A theoretical study on the enthalpies of homolytic and heterolytic N-H bond cleavage in substituted melatonins in the gas-phase and aqueous solution.

In this paper, the study of melatonin and 60 meta- and ortho-substituted melatonins is presented. The reaction enthalpies related to the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), single electron transfer - proton transfer (SET-PT) and sequential proton loss electron transfer (SPLET) have been calculated using DFT/B3LYP method in gas-phase and water. Results show that electron-withdrawing substituents incre...

Electrochemical Study of Hydrogen Adsorption/Reduction (HAR) Reaction on Graphene Oxide as Electrocatalyst for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

In the current work, graphene oxide (GO) samples were prepared at room temperature from graphite flakes using a modified Hummer's method to produce metal-free electrocatalysts. The effect of the duration of the oxidation process on the structural, chemical and physical characteristics of the GO samples was evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ...

64 v 1 2 0 Fe b 20 02 Spin dependent momentum distributions of proton - deuteron clusters in 3 He from electron scattering on polarized 3 He : theoretical predictions

The process − − → 3 He(e, e ′ p)d (or − − → 3 He(e, e ′ d)p) is studied theoretically in a Faddeev treatment with the aim to have access to the spin-dependent momentum distribution of p d clusters in polarized 3 He. Final state interactions and meson exchange currents turn out to have a strong influence in the considered kine-matical regime (below the pion threshold). This precludes the direct ...

Enhancement Of Nuclear Reactions Due To Screening Effects Of Core Electrons

Recent progress in understanding the screening effects of core level atomic electrons is summarized in this paper. Some preliminary results on core electron screening were reported before [1]. The studies focus on two types of nuclear reactions in some metal lattices: fusion between deuterons and also proton capture by medium and heavy lattice nuclei. In both reactions the energy of the light n...
